What Are the Types of Commonly Used Chromogenic Culture Media?

The chromogenic culture media is a type of new culture medium that uses the principle of microbial metabolism to produce enzymes and corresponding chromogenic substrates to react and color to detect microorganisms. In the chromogenic culture media, the corresponding chromogenic substrate is composed of pigment-producing genes and partially metabolizable substances in microorganisms. Under the action of specific enzymes, the free pigment-producing genes are released to show a certain color, and the identification of bacterial strains can be made by directly observing the colony color. It is a new type of isolation culture medium, and the sensitivity and specificity of its reaction are much better than traditional culture media.

Chromogenic culture media for Escherichia coli series

Chromogenic culture media for Escherichia coli

Used for the rapid detection of Escherichia coli in food, water, milk, ice cream, and meat products. Escherichia coli shows blue-green color, coliforms show colorless, and other bacteria show yellow or colorless. Gram-positive bacteria are suppressed.

Chromogenic culture media for coliforms

Among various types of culture medium in microbiology, the chromogenic culture media for coliforms is used for the rapid detection of coliforms in food, water, milk, ice cream, and meat products. Coliforms show blue-green color, and other bacteria show yellow or colorless. Gram-positive bacteria are suppressed.

Chromogenic culture media for Escherichia coli and coliforms

Different from other ordinary media, it can be used for the rapid detection of Escherichia coli and coliforms in food, water, milk, ice cream, and meat products. Escherichia coli shows blue to purple color, and coliforms show red color.

TBX medium

Used for the rapid detection of Escherichia coli in food, water, milk, ice cream, and meat products. Escherichia coli shows blue-green color, coliforms show colorless, and other bacteria show yellow or colorless. Gram-positive bacteria are suppressed.

Other chromogenic media

Total bacterial count chromogenic culture media

Used for the rapid detection of total bacteria in food, water, and environment, and bacteria show red color.

Chromogenic culture media for Listeria

It can quickly detect single Listeria monocytogenes in food and medicine. Negative results can be detected within 3 days. Listeria monocytogenes shows blue color, and there is an opaque ring around the colony. Peptone provides nitrogen source and amino acids, sodium chloride maintains osmotic pressure, agar is a coagulant, lithium chloride suppresses the growth of gram-negative bacteria, and inhibitory agents suppress the growth of gram-positive bacteria other than Listeria.

Chromogenic culture media for Salmonella

The chromogenic culture media for Salmonella is used for the rapid detection of Salmonella in food, water, milk, ice cream, and meat products. Except for Salmonella typhi (which shows no color on the medium), other Salmonella species show bright red color, Escherichia coli and coliforms show blue color, Citrobacter shows purple color, and other bacteria show yellow or colorless. In food contamination, the main Salmonella species are non-typhoid Salmonella, and the specificity of this medium is very high, reaching 98%. It is an ideal rapid detection culture medium.

Chromogenic culture media for Vibrio

The chromogenic culture media for Vibrio is used for the rapid detection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in food, seafood, patient stool samples, and water products. Vibrio parahaemolyticus shows blue-green to blue color, and other Vibrio species show colorless. Other bacteria show yellow or colorless, and the bacterial colonies are very small. This medium has high specificity and can overcome the false-negative results caused by the TCBS medium. It is an ideal rapid detection culture medium.
